This exciting initiative was run from 2014 to 2017 by Luton Council of Faiths (LCOF), funded by the Big Lottery Fund and supported by GRASSROOTS, aiming to provide opportunities for residents of Luton to come together and participate in archery. Offering 6 week beginner courses and the opportunity to join a local archery club, the project welcomed people from all backgrounds and focused on three main objectives:
Improving Health:
By getting people active, participating in archery sessions and working alongside Health Champions, we were able to discuss subjects of health improvement and provide qualified advice and guidance regarding healthier living, which generates health awareness and empowers people to make a positive healthy change to their life.
Increasing Community Engagement:
By bringing people from a wide range of different backgrounds together via weekly archery sessions and community festivals, we were able to create an environment where they can meet and share a common activity, engage with others and make friends they may not otherwise meet, thus reducing their sense of isolation and helping to make a positive contribution to the local community.
Creating a Stronger and Safer Luton Community:
By providing an opportunity for people from different background to meet, they were able to increase their confidence in engaging in conversations and relationships with others, which in turn helps to break down barriers of mistrust, increase community cohesiveness and so make Luton a safer place to live.
Archery sessions are fun, welcoming, tailored for beginners and coached by qualified volunteers, so whilst this project has ended, you are invited to get involved with some of the local community clubs this project has helped to create. Simply contact us at info@lutonfaiths.org for details.
